Upper Gwynedd has introduced a plastic waste reduction program, reports Dan Sokol for the Reporter.
Township commissioners unanimously approved the program. Proposed by the Environmental Advisory Council (EAC), the program allows local businesses to opt into one of three levels of plastic reduction. At the bronze level, businesses eliminate single-use plastic bags at the point of sale. The silver level adds a restriction on providing single-use items like straws and utensils only upon request. The gold level involves eliminating all forms of single-use plastics.
Participants will receive a certificate and township recognition, with the program being promoted through social media and newsletters, all at minimal cost to participants and the township. The initiative addresses items such as product bags, straws, and polystyrene containers.
The program emerged after two years of community surveys indicated strong resident support for reducing plastic use. During a presentation on October 7, and subsequent formal action on October 14, the EAC detailed plans for the initiative.
Not all public feedback was in favor of the program. Some expressed concerns about a lack of diverse viewpoints on the environmental board that led to the decision. Commissioner Greg Moll responded to concerns: “There’s no mandate from the township that forces them in any way to participate in this.”
The commissioners will reconvene on November 12, while the environmental advisory council meets on November 6. Both meetings will take place at the township administration building.
