The former home of NC Wyeth, the renowned Chadds Ford painter and illustrator and father of painter Andrew Wyeth, is on the market in Needham, Massachusetts, where he lived prior to moving to Chester County, writes Madeline Bilis for BOSTON.com.
Wyeth was born in the house adjacent to the property for sale. He left Needham in his 20s, but he continued thinking of home. So he decided to buy the house beside his parents in his 40s.
The home made many appearances in his works in the coming years, including Christmas Morning and Paul Revere. He also sometimes entertained the region’s literati there, including poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who is said to have based To the River Charles on the view from Wyeth’s yard.
Linda Bean, the granddaughter of L.L. Bean, had been working more recently to create a research library but she died last spring before she had the chance to transfer the funds needed to endow the foundation.
Listing agent Michael Niden hopes that the future owners will appreciate the history of the home and work to preserve it.
“It’s incredible to live in a place with such rich artistic and historical significance,” said Niden.
