Hundreds of Montgomery County Ballots Marked Deficient, Won’t Count Unless Fixed

With less than a week before the election, Montgomery County has received 60% of mail-in ballots submissions, expects a record turnout.

The Montgomery County Election Board in Norristown released a log of all public ballots with deficiencies that will not be counted, reports Justin Heinze for the Patch.

As of Oct. 22, 345 ballots were flagged with issues on this list.

Voters can check if their ballot is on the log, now available for the first time from the Montgomery County elections board. If listed, voters should complete a “Cancel/Replace” form to fix the issue. Common ballot errors include missing secrecy envelopes (known as “naked” ballots), missing signatures, paper damage, incorrect dates. Voter registration issues will also flag a ballot.

This new transparency step is unique to Montgomery County among Pennsylvania counties. Most counties previously shared error logs only with political parties, allowing them to reach out to voters. By making the list public, the county aims to allow voters’ friends and neighbors to help each other correct any issues if they see a familiar name on the list. This proactive approach aims to increase ballot accuracy and voter participation.

The Pennsylvania Department of State also gives voters the ability to check the status of their vote directly.
