Bryn Mawr College offers its students courses about the world of AI, reports Samantha Geiger for Main Line Today.
Computer science professor Deepak Kumar teaches the course “Artificial Intelligence: An Introduction to AI.” The class focuses on the history and early development of artificial intelligence. Despite the recent boom in the field, early forms of AI were first developed over 60 years ago.
Kumar first taught the class in 1994. He noted that since the beginning of the class, the science has evolved. “The one constant in the field is that it is always changing,” he said.
Kumar’s class isn’t the only course offered in AI. Undergrads can also take “Machine Learning,” although this is reserved for juniors and seniors with the proper prerequisites.
Aside from learning the functions of artificial intelligence, Kumar emphasized an understanding of the ethics behind the technology. “It is important to ensure that graduates are also well versed in ethical implications and uses of emerging technology and the role it plays in society,” he said.
Students can’t major in AI at Bryn Mawr College. They can, however, major in Computer Science with a focus on Artificial Intelligence.
Other local colleges also offer classes in AI including Haverford College and Swarthmore College.
