Crossing Fences’ Prison Art Program is a new program by the 365 Foundation in Lansdale that provides restorative art exhibitions for women in prisons and reentry facilities, reports IssueWire.
The 365 Foundation, which is working to help women replace the cycle of trauma that put them in prison, hopes the program will offer a rare chance for female incarcerated artists to exhibit their artwork every six months while promoting their wellbeing.
Through artistic expression, the program lets women acknowledge critical emotions and develop self-awareness.
The incarcerated women are provided art supplies and guidance. The program is collaborating with the prisons.
It is being guided by the 365 Foundations Board of Directors and led by activist/author Amanda Knox, along with local artists and art therapy instructors.
The prisons will choose the program participants who will be encouraged to create whatever they feel compelled to share.
A letter from the artist next to the artwork introduces the artist and shares their story.
Artwork sales will benefit organizations that help victims in the communities where the incarcerated women have committed crimes.
Once released, a portion will also go to the inmate to help them restart their lives.
