Online Gamblers Believe Gov. Shapiro Will Be Harris’ VP Pick
As election predictions flood online markets, Gov. Josh Shapiro is emerging as the favorite among gamblers for Kamala Harris’ running mate, writes Jesse Bunch for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Following President Joe Biden’s exit from the race, Harris secured the required number of state delegation endorsements on Monday for the Democratic nomination. However, she has not yet said whom she will choose as her prospective Vice President.
Among an array of prominent Democratic governors and senators rumored to be potential picks, Shapiro has recently emerged as a front-runner.
Online election betting markets have him at the top, with users betting millions on whether he or another contender will earn Harris’ nod.
Over $16 million has already poured into Polymarket, the outcome prediction platform, to bet on who will be Harris’ vice presidential selection.
“Betting Shapiro right now is something I really love,” said a political gambler who wanted to remain anonymous. “I think his price is too low. I think he is the guy.”
The money being bet on potential running mates for Harris also signals the popularity of unregulated political gambling while Federal regulators are racing to damp it down due to its susceptibility to manipulation.
