Delco Native Revives 1800s Farmhouse in Elkins Park with Modern Touches
Delco native and seasoned woodworker Colin Browne, and his wife Karolye Eldridge were living in New England until the cost of living forced them to reconsider their location, writes Laura Hoover for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Their return led them to an 1800s farmhouse in Elkins Park, nestled beside Tookany Creek, in need of significant repair.
Despite its structural issues and a deteriorating horse barn, the property’s price was right, and Eldridge had secured a job in Philadelphia.
The barn, now restored and painted black with vibrant orange doors, serves as the workspace for Colin Browne Woodworking.
The couple has spent over a decade transforming the 3,500-square-foot, four-bedroom house while retaining its historical essence.
The kitchen now features cabinets crafted from a 200-year-old white ash tree that once stood on the property. The dining room is home to a large table made from Spanish cedar and copper.
A contemporary back porch provides a tranquil space overlooking the yard, while an exterior orange door leads to a former speakeasy, Browne’s upcoming restoration project.
