Shankweiler’s Drive-In Theater, just a short ride away from Montgomery County, is reintroducing the magic of movies as an outdoor experience, reports Lee Anne Kayati for 6 ABC.

The theater is on a mission to bring people back to the days when film fans enjoyed movies from lawn chairs, truck beds, and under the stars.

Located in Orefield, Lehigh County, the movie theater recently celebrated its 90th anniversary, which is a feat of its own. It is the oldest operating drive-in theater not only in America but also in the world.

“It’s really incredible when we think about it,” said Lauren McChesney, who owns Shankweiler’s Drive-In Theater with Matthew McClanahan.

“Ninety years ago, it was in the middle of the Great Depression. It’s just been through so much history, and it’s still standing almost 100 years later is incredible.”

The theater sits on approximately four acres of land and can hold around 300 cars.

“It’s very special to be able to watch a movie outside under the stars with other people who are just as passionate about it as you are,” said McChesney.
