Carson Deringer, a sophomore at Harriton High in Bryn Mawr, has managed to shave more than eight strokes off his golf handicap index over the last 12 months, writes Nick Dimengo for GOLF.
Deringer fell in love with the game during the pandemic.
“I’ve always played golf, mainly because my grandfather was a golf pro,” he said. “I was a big baseball player, but after COVID hit, I fell in love with golf. That’s when I started loving it and playing a lot.”
At first, he just played for fun, ignoring his score.
“When I did keep score, I would shoot in the low-100s,” said Deringer.
Once he became more serious about his play, he started using a practice net every day to work on his swing mechanics. He also got a launch monitor which helps him track specific stats about his swings and made several swing adjustments.
“Changing my grip definitely helped a lot,” he said. “I’ve also really worked on rotating more, making sure my tempo is good.”
Deringer also likes to play against better competition because that makes him push his own game, so he joins as many tournaments as he can.
