Sarcone’s Bakery in South Philadelphia Has Spanned 5 Generations of the Same Family

Sarcone's Bakery has been a South Philly staple his Luigi Sarcone opened it in 1918. Since then, his son, grandson, great-grandson, and now great-great grandson has lead its operations.

Sarcone’s is a famed South Philadelphia bread bakery that opened in 1918 in the Sarcone family rowhouse.

Now, more than 100 years later, the bakery has spanned five generations, writes Michael Klein for The Philadelphia Inquirer

While the transitions from one generation to the next each had its own unique circumstances, each transition can be traced down to the younger generations developing some experience working at the bakery.

The bakery was founded by Luigi Sarcone, who ran the shop until the 1950s when he suffered a heart attack, leading his son, Peter, to take over.

Peter eventually turned the business over to his son, Louis Sr., who eventually turned it over to his son, Louis Jr. 

Since the latter semi-retired after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, his son, Louis III, has become the lead man. 

“It’s really cool, taking over a business knowing that I’m the fifth one to do it,” Louis III said. 

While Louis III currently has no kids of his own, Louis Jr. is confident the legacy will keep going. 

“I’m confident he’s in good hands for another 40, 50 years. I know he sucked up enough information, I feel confident about that,” said Louis Jr.
