Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church was recently hit by a vandal who left its age-old stained glass windows shattered, but the situation has served as a way to bring the community together, writes BNN Correspondents for BNN.

In response to the vandalism, CADO Market and Legacy Reclaimed 7th Ward Tribute has led and orchestrated a fundraiser to tend to the physical harm while also honoring the church’s long legacy.

This represents the power of collective action and the deep reverence for historical landmarks that serve as anchors in the community.

The two organizations both have a heightened focus on celebrating and preserving Black culture.

Mother Bethel AME Church fits the bill, as it stands as the oldest piece of land continuously owned by African-Americans in the United States. 

The church’s windows date back to 1890, representing well over a century of history.

While the vandalism has hurt both the church and the community, it has also provided an opportunity to reaffirm the community’s solidarity and resilience.

It also serves as a powerful reminder of the strength found in unity and the importance of preserving Black history.
