When a couple in dire need of space opted to buy a big stone house in Bryn Mawr, they found a layout that was more old school with a center hall, crown moldings, and ceiling medallions, writes Eileen Smith Dallabrida for the Main Line Today.

While they would have preferred a more modern aesthetic, due to being busy with two demanding careers and an active household, the couple chose to give their home an artful update instead of starting a big demolition project.

They chose the Philadelphia-based firm Kaminski + Pew to give their new home a fresh look.

“They were hoping to get their family settled into the new home as quickly as possible,” said architect Kevin Kaminski. “So we opted for a minimally invasive approach.”

The team created a floor-to-ceiling design that highlighted the rugs, furnishings, and lighting fixtures.

The foyer now has a mid-century modern credenza that fits perfectly with traditional wainscoting.

The elegant living room has a streamlined leather sofa and soft, flexible occasional seating. Meanwhile, the contemporary chandelier in the dining room descends from a ceiling medallion.
