Exclusive: How MCCC Alumnus Seth Compas Paved His Way to Professional Basketball in Germany
From the basketball courts of Montgomery County Community College (MCCC), alumnus Seth Compas turned his lifelong passion into a story of triumph, crediting his time at MCCC as the turning point in his journey toward success in the sport.
Now Compas is taking his athletic skills abroad. The 23-year-old shooting guard from Blue Bell is now officially signed to the Braves in Berlin, Germany.
Despite having a father who played basketball, Compas’ athletic prowess wasn’t always evident. He didn’t play for his high school team and was “super shy” when starting college.
Compas says that he implemented the skills he learned while playing for the Mustangs at his four-year university in Iowa.
“The entire staff gave me the confidence I needed to pursue my dreams,” he said.
Kelly Dunbar, Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation, says the program has “really elevated over the past four years”.
She credits the program’s upward trajectory to Coach Nyere Miller.
Since Miller started his tenure, the team won the region and nationally ranked multiple years in a row, putting the college on a map. Dunbar says that MCCC is a place where high school athletes want to be.
After playing at Montco, Seth matriculated into Union College for a semester, before transferring to Graceland University where he played for the Yellowjackets.
He graduated in May of 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and political science. Seth’s legacy continued at Montco, as the team recruited his younger brother.
Compas credits Montco for both his athletic and academic strengths. He encourages student-athletes to stay focused in academics, because they could qualify for merit scholarships at four-year colleges.
“You can’t play basketball without doing your homework,” he said.
Compas says that his time at Montco reinforced his belief that hard work really does pay off. That mantra could not be truer, as he forges a new path playing professionally in Germany.
“It’s been surreal, this has been my dream my entire life,” he said.
Compas could not stress enough how important the staff were to him and his development.
“They mean the world to me,” he said.
“Seth has helped us, and we have helped Seth,” said Dunbar.
