Lower Merion High School’s Global Citizenship class helps students start their journey to becoming forces of good as “global citizens” by combining classroom learning and experiential service trips, according to a staff report from the LMHS Newsroom.

Students increase their intercultural competence and global awareness through in-depth exploration of various social justice subjects, such as racial justice and equity, environmental sustainability, LGBTQ+ rights, fighting poverty, and many more.

The program is led by longtime LMHS social studies teacher Tom Reed. He recently introduced Emily Robinson from Cradles to Crayons to his students.

She spoke about the effects poverty has on children, and how Cradles to Crayons helps combat these issues by providing kids living in homeless or low-income situations with the vital items they need to thrive at home and in school.

In response, the Global Citizenship students set up a winter clothing drive to help support Cradles to Crayons’ mission. As part of the program’s experiential service trips component, students took the clothes they had gathered to Cradles to Crayons’ Giving Factory in Philadelphia for some experience of hands-on community service.
