Joe Gale recently reflected on his time on the board of Montgomery County Commissioners as the “lone Republican,” writes Rachel Ravina for Main Line Media News.

Gale’s second term ended in December 2023, and he said that he accomplished what he hoped to do which was “disrupt the status quo.”

“I was never elected with the support of the party. I was elected with the support of the people,” he said.

Gale’s interest in local government started while he was in high school, and he attended council and zoning hearing board meetings.

He said, “…I found local government fascinating because that’s what actually impacts our daily lives…”

Even at that young age, he truly believed that decisions should be left to the people, not to the current party politics.

As a commissioner, he said he tried to be a watchdog making sure that the board provided checks and balances.”

Gale was very vocal about many issues during his tenure, including the COVID-19 pandemic, budgets, and contracts related to the Montgomery County Justice Center.

His advice for the new board of commissioners? “Do what’s best for the taxpayers” when governing.

Gale ran for governor in 2021 but lost during the primary.
