Jamila Winder, the first Black female Montgomery County commissioner and current chair, recently spent the day at the White House for a meeting with other Black leaders, writes Gregory Purcell for WFMZ 69 News.

Winder and 8 others gathered at the White House to discuss important issues to the Black community.

“We talked about issues on gun violence, we talked about affordable housing and the homelessness crisis, and ways in which Montgomery County can optimize some of the reforms and funding that are coming out of the federal government,” she said at a recent commissioners’ meeting.

In her remarks, she reminded everyone that February is Black History Month and recognized Tina Lawson, the first Black elected Register of Wills, and Dr. Janine Darby, the first Black elected as Coroner, both of whom were in the audience.

Winder also took time to congratulate Governor Josh Shapiro for championing a state budget that would provide more funding for higher education, public transit, and programs that help the most vulnerable in the county’s communities.
