Democrats Jamila Winder and Neil Makhija have won the race for the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.

As of late Tuesday night, there were still votes to count so it is unclear which Republican candidate will take the third spot. Thomas DiBello and Liz Ferry are both vying for that seat.

Winder is the first Black woman formally elected to the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners. She was appointed to the board in February after the departure of Democratic Commissioner Dr. Val Arkoosh.

Makhija, a University of Pennsylvania election law professor and leader of Impact, a national civics organization, is the first Asian American elected to any county board of commissioner in Pennsylvania.

The Democrats have kept majority control over the county board.

In other election news, Philadelphia voters have elected Cherelle Parker as its first Black woman mayor, reports Susan Phillips for WHYY.

The 51-year-old native of Northwest Philadelphia has served as the chair of the Delaware River Port Authority since February 2021.

According to Kate Huangpu of Spotlight PA, Democrat Daniel McCaffery beat Republican Carolyn Carluccio for a spot on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
