Pottstown Native Bobby Shantz Ties the Late Al Monchak as Oldest Phillies Alumnus Ever

Bobby Shantz was a left-handed pitcher in the Major Leagues.

Bobby Shantz, a baseball player who played for the Philadelphia Athletics and the Philadelphia Phillies, matches the late Al Monchak as the oldest Philadelphia Phillies player at 98, writes Larry Shenk for MLB.com.

Shantz was born in Pottstown on September 26, 1925, and on last report lives in Ambler. He was a left-handed pitcher and enjoyed a 16-year in Major League Baseball.

He was the 1952 American League MVP with the Philadelphia Athletics and ended his baseball career pitching 14 games with the 1964 Phillies.

He also played with the Kansas City Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, and Houston Colt 45s.

As of the end of January, there were 15 Phillies alumni in the Nonagenarian Club — players between the ages of 90 and 99.

Monchak who was 98 when he passed away in 2015 played 19 games as a middle infielder in 1940. He later coaches for the White Sox, A’s, Pirates, and Braves.

Shantz is also the second-oldest living MLB player. Art Schallock and Bill Greason are the oldest at 99 years old.
