Women’s Animal Center in Bensalem is bringing back a pre-COVID program that helps children and furry friends fall in love with reading, reports Sheila Watko for NBC 10.

Story Tails allows children who are on the shyer side to practice their reading to shelter pets. Kids feel that the animals won’t judge them if they mispronounce a word.

This allows children to enhance their literary abilities and to grow confidence in their reading comprehension skills. It also benefits the animals, who are soothed by a human voice.

The program is tailored towards children of all reading levels, who can bring a book from home, or pick from a selection of animal-themed books at the shelter.

Children from kindergarten to eighth grade can participate in Story Tails.

Women’s Animal Shelter provides other services, including a vet clinic, community dog training, and a local food pantry.
