The donation will fund scholarships as well as support enrollment initiatives and the building of two new centers, one focused on academic excellence and the other on applied biological and health sciences at Merion Mercy Academy.

All-girls Catholic High School, Merion Mercy Academy, has received its largest donation in the over 100-year history of the school, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The $9.1 million gift came from the Howley Foundation founded by Nick and Lorie Howley. The donation will fund scholarships as well as support enrollment initiatives and the building of two new centers, one focused on academic excellence and the other on applied biological and health sciences.

Nick Howley is the founder and chairman of TransDigm Group Inc. based in Cleveland. He also chairs the board of the Cristo Rey Network.

The Howleys started the foundation in 2001 to offer financial aid to students in Cleveland and Philadelphia.

The foundation had already established the Howley Scholars program at Merion Mercy which is located in Merion Station.

“[The Howleys’] continued commitment through the Howley Scholars program, coupled with this remarkable gift for our capital initiatives, amplifies our joint dedication to empowering young women who are prepared to lead through innovation and service in a constantly evolving world,” Marianne Grace, Merion Mercy’s head of school, said.
