The merger between Doylestown Health and University of Pennsylvania Health System has been more than a decade in the making, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.  

Kevin Mahoney, Penn Medicine’s CEO said that the healthcare system and Doylestown Health have been discussing a potential partnership for years.  

“I think this is something that just evolved naturally. As affiliates we talk all the time.” 

Doylestown Hospital has been part of the Penn Cancer Network for several years, opening the Penn Radiation Oncology in 2011. Throughout the decade, the relationship between the two health systems continued to grow with the addition of Penn cardiac surgery resident rotations, heart and lung care, and more.  

“In this past year we really started to think about what we could do to add value to the great stuff that we’ve already been able to do together,” said CEO of Doylestown Health, James Brexler.  

While it wasn’t the easiest decision to drop the title of being one of the last independently operated health care systems in the region, Brexler says that Penn “checks all of the boxes” of being a good partner.
