Murray Savar, a longtime chair of the Visual and Performing Arts Department at Agnes Irwin School in Rosemont, died of glioblastoma on October 30 at 68, writes Gary Miles for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The beloved music director was also a musician, singer, composer, teacher, and minister.

He was the longest-tenured member of the Agnes Irwin faculty. Savar joined the school 46 years ago and taught students in prekindergarten through high school music, drama, and the dynamic art of life.

He also created and directed countless concerts and plays over the years and managed Bel Cantos, the school’s celebrated a cappella group.

To honor his contributions to the Agnes Irwin community, the board of trustees decided to name the Lower School’s driveway the Murray Savar Circle in 2017.

Following his death, school officials posted a memorial tribute to him and scheduled a December 15 celebration of his life.

“He filled every space he entered with music, laughter, and joy,” said Head of School Sally Keidel.

“His music and friendship enriched our souls, and he brought out the best in all of us because he was simply the best,” added Lower School Dean Julie Haines.
