General Anthony Wayne — after whom Wayne in Chester County is named — might have been notorious during his life, but it is his post-mortem adventures that are even more intriguing than his exploits on the battlefield, writes Ben Silver for Main Line Today.

Ten years after he died in 1809 on Lake Erie, his children, Isaac and Margretta, decided to bring their father’s body home to Easttown Township. But when Isaac arrived at Lake Erie, he realized Wayne’s body had been preserved to a shocking extent due to the type of ground he was buried in.

Since he only brought a small crate, he now had to find a way to strip flesh from his father’s corpse. A local doctor helped him boil the body so that the flesh could be easily removed.

Once that task was completed, he headed home. Since the road was rough, some of the bones fell out along the way.

As a result, it is said that each Jan. 1 on his birthday, Wayne’s skeleton can be seen riding between his two resting places in search of the bones his son lost.
