Lansdale’s historic Freight House is closer to its long-planned revival thanks to Friends of the Freight House, writes Dan Sokil for The Reporter.
The Friends of the Freight House campaign aims to transform the century-old station on Broad Street into a Welcome Center and event venue.
Discover Lansdale volunteer Bruce Schwartz shared updates this week, highlighting the progress and financial hurdles. “Thanks to several grants from state and historic agencies, as well as some generous community donations, we are well on our way to reaching our goals. But they do not get us all the way,” he said.
Built in 1902 as a shipping hub, the station closed in the 1970s after years of decline. Discover Lansdale acquired the property in 2016 and has since hosted open houses and cleanups. The freight house had minor exterior repairs in 2021, followed by parking lot improvements in 2023.
New renderings reveal plans for open spaces, an accessible restroom, and a bike repair station. “We’re thrilled to report that plans are complete and contracts are being signed,” Schwartz added.
Community support is vital to bridge the funding gap. Donations can be made via the Freight House website, where updates and historic photos are also shared.
