The Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown strives to ensure inclusivity among staff and visitors as a certified autism center, writes Wakisha Bailey for CBS News.

A certified autism center is an organization in which at least 80% of its staff is highly trained in the field of autism.

“That includes having programming where we allow individuals with all sorts of needs through gates to learn,” James Sheard, associate director of guest services at Elmwood Park Zoo, said. “But also have them on the other side and have them be some of our ambassadors.”

Michael Romano has been working with the zoo for five years now as part of KenCrest’s supported employment program for individuals living with disabilities.

His favorite part of his job at Elmwood Park Zoo is spending time with the giraffes.

“We are looking to identify a job that will match their individual skills and abilities along with their interests,” Jessica Birkmire, director of employment for KenCrest, explained.
