Concordville Inn demolition has begun. The 18th century building will be replaced with a rehab hospital.

Demolition on the 246-year-old Concordville Inn in Glen Mills has begun with a portion of it down before the Thanksgiving holiday, writes Emma Dooling for Philadelphia Business Journal.

The Alabama healthcare company Encompass Health Corp. bought the property on June 15 for $3.5 million with the intent to build an inpatient rehabilitation hospital on the site.

The freestanding, 50-bed facility replaces the 32,000-square-foot Concordville Inn’s Bar & Grille and Event Center at 780 Baltimore Pike.

Construction on the hospital is slated to start in mid-2024.

Concord Township Council approved the demolition in March with conditions.

Photographs of the interior and exterior of the building are being given to the Concord Township Historical Commission.

Local art in the building, including “historic imagery or murals of the local area,” had to be displayed in the proposed development.

The hospital building must also be “sensitive to the architectural style” of the Concordville Inn and “preserve” the historic nature of the street.

The Concordville Inn’s Bar & Grille and Event Center closed on June 24.

A 115-room Best Western hotel next door was not part of the sale.

The Concordville Inn at Routes 1 and 322 opened as a roadside tavern in 1777.
