Weavers Way Co-op in Ambler Still Fights Hunger Despite Closure of Community Fridge
Although the Weavers Way Co-op community refrigerator in Ambler has closed its doors, the member-run grocery store is still finding ways to help people struggling with food insecurity, according to Nation World News Desk.
A group of students at Germantown Academy can take credit for coming up with the idea. The fridge, which opened in May of 2021, spiked in popularity very quickly due to its convenience.
However, it did not meet the FDA’s guidelines for 2022.
Because the fridge is connected to a store, it’s required to be monitored at all times. Donations must also come from an approved source to ensure that the food is prepared safely.
Standalone community fridges will remain open for now in Montgomery County. Weavers Way’s general manager Joe Roesser says that the co-op is dedicated to stocking the fridge wherever it goes. There are discussions about potentially placing it in front of a church.
In the interim period, the co-op is asking people to donate food to the Mattie Dixon Community Cupboard and giving out $10 vouchers to use at their store.
