Weavers Way Co-op has partnered with Germantown Academy to open a community fridge outside its Ambler location, writes Sinead Cummings for the Philly Voice.

Students from the Fort Washington private school that teaches Pre-K through high school created 1,000 magnets for the mutual-aid project.

The fridge is open 24 hours, seven days a week to community members who are facing food insecurity or any other barriers that prevent them from having access to fresh and healthy foods.

People can take what they need from the fridge, and leave what they can.

Acceptable donations include eggs, packaged meals, milk and non-dairy milk, yogurt and non-dairy yogurt, bread and pastries, fruits, fresh produce, and cooked meat and seafood.

Uncooked meat, alcohol, expired products, opened packaged food, and similar items will not be accepted.

Cash donations can also be made to @wwcommunityfridge using Venmo, the mobile payment service.

The Ambler fridge is the member-owned grocery store’s first, but they have previously supported the Germantown Community Fridge with items and through fundraising.

Weavers Way Co-op also has locations in Mt. Airy and Chestnut Hill.
