Wynnewood’s Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary has received a large programming grant from Lilly Endowment to improve the preaching by clergy, writes Matthew Gambino for Catholic Philly.

Lilly Endowment, which is a foundation based in Indianapolis, announced the award on September 27 as part of its Compelling Preaching Initiative.

The foundation made grants ranging from $250,000 to $1.25 million to churches, as well as Christian faith-based universities and organization. In total it distributed over $95 million.

The mission of the Compelling Preaching Initiative is to help Christian pastors preach the Gospel “in more engaging and effective ways,” according to Lilly Endowment.

‘Throughout history, preachers often have needed to adapt their preaching practices to engage new generations of hearers more effectively,” said Christopher L. Coble, Lilly Endowment’s vice president for religion.

“We are pleased that the organizations receiving grants in this initiative will help pastors and others in ministry engage in the kinds of preaching needed today to ensure that the Gospel message is heard and accessible for all audiences.”

Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary will use the grant money to establish a Catholic Preaching Institute where clergy will work on their craft with the help of other preachers and lay evaluators.
