Maui Chef with Roots in West Chester Helps Residents Who Lost Everything in Wildfire

By

Zach Sato, a Maui chef with family roots in West Chester, and his restaurant Havens, with two Maui locations, are doing their part to help survivors and relief workers after the wildfire that devastated Hawaii, writes Christie Ileto for 6ABC.

Sato has been pitching in with 500 meals a day for those who have lost everything.

“A lot of chaos,” said Sato. “A lot of sadness. Just trying my best to help out where I can.”

After the wildfire, Sato was asked by other chefs on the island to make meals for residents whose homes were gone. That first day, he and his staff put together 300 sandwiches. Every day since, they have been making 500 a day.

With plenty of volunteers willing to help, Sato is now working on outfitting his restaurant’s kitchen to be able to churn out 1,000 meals a day.

“Some staff, some family members, some random volunteers that see what we’re doing on social media that come up and want to help,” he said. “Our community is as strong as it gets and it’s been really refreshing to see.”
