Rory Ehrlich, 6, of West Pottsgrove, Montgomery County, has reached the third and final round of the 2023 USA Mullet Championships. It benefits Wounded Warriors. He is shown before baseball practice.

When he was 5, Rory Ehrlich of West Pottsgrove asked his barber at Sal’s Barbershop in Boyertown for a mullet.

His mother, Airen Ehrlich, 33, said that his interest in the haircut seemed to come out of nowhere, but it may be because it is a popular choice for many baseball players like John Kruk.

Now a year later, at the age of six, Rory is a finalist in the USA Mullet Championships, which are based in Michigan. At last check, he was number 35 out of 399 in the age 5 to 8 category. Final online voting ends on August 11.

Rory explained in an interview why he’s into the mullet: “It keeps you comfy and warm. And when I play baseball, it blows in the wind when I run. It’s cool.”

He was the one who told his parents about the contest and how he wanted to enter. The Mullet Championship was started in 2020 by Kevin Begola, the owner of a men’s shop in Fenton, Michigan called Bridge Street Exchange.

Participants must raise money for Jared Allen’s Homes 4 Wounded Warriors, formed in 2009 by Allen, a former defensive end for the Minnesota Vikings. The nonprofit builds and remodels homes for critically injured veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The contest in total has raised over $100,000 so far this year.
