Danielle Kocher, a graduate of Arcadia University in Glenside, has adopted a slow and intentional growth strategy for her Philadelphia vegan protein ball company, Plants on Fire, writes Lisa Dukart for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Cognizant of the many pitfalls startups face, she has decided to focus on adding wholesale accounts.

Kocher started Plants on Fire in 2019 as a wholesale and direct-to-consumer business. Since then, she has established contracts with Riverwards Produce, South Philly Food Co-op, specialty grocery Salt and Vinegar, and Herman’s Coffee.

Kocher has focused on funding the business herself and limiting her products, avoiding the need to partner up with a co-packer or a large retailer.

She first got the idea for the protein balls when she was disappointed with the vegan protein bars that were already on the market. She started experimenting with recipes in her kitchen and Plants on Fire was born.

Kocher also works as a nutrition coach and is certified in plant-based nutrition through Precision Nutrition.
