A ‘Rising Star’: Boston Celtics Hire Friends’ Central Grad as Assistant Coach

Amile Jefferson was a star at Friends' Central before going on to play at Duke and in the NBA.

The Boston Celtics have hired Amile Jefferson, a former Duke University and Friends’ Central star, as an assistant coach under Joe Mazzula, writes Gustav Elvin for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Jefferson, 30, a Philadelphia native, joins the Celtics after serving as an assistant coach at Duke.

Considered a “rising star in the coaching profession,” he also served as the Blue Devil’s director of player development for a season. He is making a name for himself quickly in the coaching world after retiring from pro ball in 2021.

“The Celtics are getting a winner — one of the hardest working, most passionate, positive and dedicated people I know,” Duke coach Jon Scheyer said.

“He is a tremendous teacher of the game and his ability to connect with players is innate. I can’t thank Amile enough for all he’s meant to me and our program.”

As a player, Jefferson was a two-time All-G League performer and played 30 NBA games for the Orlando Magic. At Duke, he was a three-year captain and won a national championship in 2014-15.

While playing in high school for Friends’ Central in Wynnewood, he led the Phoenix to a 98-14 record and four Pennsylvania Independent Schools Tournament titles. He was named a McDonald’s All-American in his senior year and was named the Pennsylvania Gatorade player of the year twice.
