Dr. Sam P. Wyche III, of Wyndmoor, who used his own mental health experiences to help others, passed away at age 41 from cardiac arrest, writes Gary Miles for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Wyche had earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Morehouse College and a medical degree from Temple University. He spent a summer at Yale University researching neurobiology and started a residency in pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

As a student at Springfield High School, he was in the peer helper program in the 1990s. And later he would counsel others on seeking mental health treatment.

“He was inquisitive, joyful, friendly, caring about family, and dedicated and loyal to his friends,” said his stepmother, Leslie Brown Wyche.

He always wanted to help anyone he felt could benefit from his mental health experiences.

“He could understand why people felt the way they did,” said his father. “He knew what their challenges were.”
