DVT Treatment Helped Jenkintown Resident Get Back to His Active Lifestyle

By

Jonathan Griffin, of Jenkintown, was able to recover quickly from Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT, thanks to new technology developed by Temple University Hospital, according to a staff report from 6ABC.

Griffin had knee surgery a few years ago, and shortly after, even the simplest tasks were leaving him breathless.

“Going up and down the steps, I was breathing heavy,” he said.

He thought all he needed to do was lose a few pounds before he was able to start enjoying his active lifestyle once again. Once he did, he signed up for a zipline adventure, but he had the same problem as he climbed to the starting point.

A few more similar situations prompted him to head for Temple University Hospital, where X-rays showed a clot in his knee as well as more in his lungs.

“Like it was almost a miracle that I was even there,” he said.

He was rushed to a procedure room, where the Bashir catheter developed at Temple was used to break down the clots in half the usual time. With the catheter, the doctors were able to put the drugs right into the clot.

Today, Griffin no longer even needs to take blood thinners, and is back to his active lifestyle.

“I’m supposed to be going camping with all my grandkids,” he said.
