Abington Township received a land development application from Fort Washington-based Toll Brothers for the former St. Basil Academy property in Jenkintown, reported Ryan Genova for the Glenside Local.

The developer of luxury homes has been in contact with the township about the site since 2021.

“As part of the land development application, the applicant will be going to the Planning Commission meeting on May 23, 2023, at 7:30 PM,” said a township official.

Next will be a June 8 Conditional Use Hearing that will take place during the Board of Commissioners’ working session.

“The Board of Commissioners will dictate the next steps in the process based on the Planning Commission’s decision and information provided at the public hearing,” again commented a township source.

St. Basil Academy was forced to close its doors for good in the spring of 2021. The all-girls high school that had operated in Jenkintown for more than nine decades was dealt the final blow by the pandemic. It was staffed and administered by Ukrainian Catholic Sisters of St. Basil the Great.

“We understand this unwelcome news brings shock, heartbreak, and uncertainty to many in our school community,” said a school official at the time. “We, too, are heartbroken.”
