The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, with its flagship teaching hospital in Bala Cynwyd, has announced the welcome of its first graduates from PCOM South Georgia.

Fifty-three students will become the first doctors of osteopathic medicine to graduate from the satellite campus in Moultrie, Ga., on May 25.

PCOM South Georgia opened there in the fall of 2019. It is the only medical school in Southwest Georgia, and its mission is to train physicians who can provide medical care in underserved rural areas.

Seven students will also graduate with from the master of science degree program in biomedical sciences.

This is not the South Georgia campus’ first commencement. In 2022, eight students graduated from its biomedical sciences program. That program includes a traditional two-year track, as well as an accelerated one-year track.

James L. Matney, chief executive officer and president of Colquitt Regional Medical Center in Moultrie, will be the keynote speaker for the 2023 commencement.

He was one of the leading proponents of the initiative when discussions started about the possibility of locating a medical school in Moultrie. He was also instrumental in establishing the Georgia South Family Medicine and Psychiatry Residency Programs at Colquitt Regional Medical Center, also in Moultrie.
