Baldwin School Alum Turns Relationship-Signaling into Successful Fashion Brand
Tori Robinson, an alumna of The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, certainly knows resiliency, both professionally and personally. Krystie Lee Yandoli reported in The New York Times how the Montgomery County-educated fashion designer is turning breakups into a cash-cow brand.
Robinson and her corporate cofounder, friends since they were teenagers, wanted to collaborate commercially and build a successful business. Their first venture — beauty products — sputtered.
They then tapped into their shared experiences of college relationships gone wrong.
They designed several pieces that caught on; all the wearable items broadcast a rallying cry for women finding themselves on dating’s downside: “Boys Lie.”
Out went the cosmetics. In came the fashion.
Hollywood females of note rallied around the clothing and began wearing it publicly. They were attracted by the loungewear’s comfortable fit and its female-forward messaging.
A yellow hoodie, for example, reads “1-800-BOYS-LIE.” Its accompanying sweatpants declare “We’re sorry, the number you’re trying to reach has moved on.”
Brand champions include model Gigi Hadid and Bravo reality-star Ariana Madix.
