Quinnipiac University forward Sam Lipkin — a former student of La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor — provided one of three passes that scored an overtime NCAA win the Quinnipiac University Bobcats this weekend. Melanie Heller profiled Lipkin in The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Lipkin, a freshman, has ice in his blood. His Winnipeg-native father ensured he “… had a hockey stick [his] hands early,” he recalled.
Rather than immediately playing junior hockey, a Division I training ground, Lipkin went the prep-school route in Montgomery County.
That decision made him a long-shot; less than two percent of all Division I recruits get picked for collegiate play.
After competing at La Salle for two years, he then went the junior hockey route, joining the United States Hockey League (USHL).
“Education was a big part of my family growing up,” he said. “And La Salle [College High] provides the best of both worlds.
“I wasn’t one of the ‘chosen ones’ growing up,” continued the 20-year-old. “[I had to] pick my own path and what was best for me … . I think I got rewarded for that.”
At the Apr. 8 NCAA championship, 10 seconds into overtime, Lipkin was part of a chain of passes that took the puck from faceoff to the Quinnipiac winning goal.
Sam Lipkin’s story — filed before the team’s first-ever title win — is at The Philadelphia Inquirer.
