Overbrook Teacher Honored for Excellence; Gift Will Fund Update to School Library
Overbrook High School principal Kahlila Johnson is being honored for her work, as reported by KYW Newsradio’s Mike DeNardo.
Johnson is being awarded $20,000 for excellence in leadership and humanitarianism in her workplace near Penn Wynne, Montgomery County.
The accomplishments that propelled her recognition include use of a Philadelphia School District educational model specifically designed to prepare students for careers.
Johnson’s work in this regard has paid off: Every member of the class of 2023 has either been accepted to a college or earned enrollment in a trade school.
That uplift, however, is tempered by grief. Overbrook High School was the site of two shooting incidents this academic year that wounded five young adults.
Johnson helped her kids, her staff, and her parents in the aftermath.
“Although we have had things that have happened that are very traumatic in our community and our city, there are a lot of young people who are doing a lot of good work,” she said.
She plans to use the award funds to refurbish the school library.
The award Johnson won is overseen by the Lindback Foundation. Its founders, Christian and Mary Lindback, created it in 1961 from proceeds of their very successful family business, Abbott’s Dairies.
