Despite nursing shortages everywhere, men still only make up about 12.1 percent of the nursing workforce.

Cliff Konah, a father of five sons in Broomall, is going back to school to become a nurse to prove to other men that it’s a good career to pursue, writes Mateo Iadonisi for 6abc.

“I guess you could say I have a whole bunch of family that’s in nursing,” said Konah. “And I strayed away from it a little bit.”

Konah was a carpenter first, then fell in love with healthcare.

“It seemed like it’s just in the genes,” he said.

He’s joined the Delaware County Intermediate Unit’s Delaware County Technical Schools (DCTS) Practical Nursing Program. There are 10 men currently in the program.

The one-year of training gives students the skills they need to become Licensed Practical Nurses. The program reports a 90 percent job placement rate for graduates.

Program supervisor Stacy Delaney is all in on recruiting more men.

“You might have a patient that really works best with males,” she said.

Konah hopes his pursuit of a nursing career will show other men that becoming a nurse isn’t as hard as they might think.
