Philadelphia's Chinatown neighborhood, which would see the most change with a go-ahead for 76 Place.

The proposed 76 Place — the state-of-the-art sports facility for the Philadelphia 76ers championed by Penn Valley developer David Adelman — will be getting scrutinized in an independent study. KYW Newsradio’s Nina Baratti reported the project’s newest wrinkle.

The complex at 10th and Market streets has been a lightning rod since it was proposed.

Adelman and other supporters see it as an economic driver in a downtown section whose retail vivacity faded decades ago.

Residents of the Chinatown area in which it will sit believe it will all but obliterate their homes, culture, and livelihoods.

“This project is an exciting opportunity for the city and the downtown and private investment, so there’s a lot of potential upside to it,” said Mayor Jim Kenney. “But we truly can’t make a decision with moving forward until we have the data that comes as a result of the study.”

City officials are now accepting proposals from analysis firms interested in tackling the deep dive into the project’s ramifications.

“We won’t try to influence it,” Kenney said. “And neither will the Sixers or the opponents. … We’ll get, I think, what the true facts are and the true impact is.”

Further information on the feasibility of 76 Place is at KYW Newsradio.
