Despite Array of Upscale Montco Food Stores, This Workaday Brand Is Favored

By

When heading out to refill their pantries or grab what’s required for the day’s meals, grocery shoppers in Montgomery County have plenty of choices. Ryan Mulligan, in the Philadelphia Business Journal, reported a Food Trade News analysis of the area’s go-to spots for household staples.

Among the upscale supermarket chains in Montgomery County, brands like Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Wegmans have certainly made inroads. But their “experiential” sales models often come at a premium, with prices reflecting the costs of creating enticing environments with mouthwatering food displays.

In the value v. vanity decision-making process, Montgomery County food shoppers lean toward a more wallet-friendly place to get their milk, eggs, and bread.

According to Trade Food News, Giant is the top choice in Montgomery County, as well in the entire eight-county Philadelphia area. It holds 30 percent of the grocery store market share.

The supermarket chain has managed to take an additional 0.65 percent of the market compared with the prior year, which equated to around $69.6 million in sales. The company is currently furthering its expansion in the region.

ShopRite is the second most popular collar-county supermarket chain, with 26.6 percent share. Acme came in third with 18.62 percent of the market.

The other big players rate as follows:

  • Wegmans, 6.72 percent
  • Whole Foods, 4.4 percent
  • Aldi, 4.36 percent
  • Redner’s Markets, 2.6 percent
  • Weis Markets, 1.98 percent
  • Trader Joe’s, 1.74 percent

When accounting for stores that focus on more than just groceries, however, Montgomery County shoppers pushed a different local name to the top three: Wawa.
