While Arizona is readying for The Birds to flock to the Super Bowl, the state has many eagles of their own. Members of the state’s Game and Fish Department keep watch over the bald eagles near the Tonto National Forest, writes Jessica Kartalija for CBS Philadelphia. One of them is a Willow Grove native Kyle McCarty, who is no stranger to both kinds of eagles.

McCarty is the department’s Eagle Fields projects coordinator.

“They always will be my team even though I live in Arizona now, so yes, I’m definitely rooting for the Eagles. It’s just a happy coincidence that I end up working with bald eagles. It’s pretty cool,” he said.

The state has 95 bald eagle territories and has increased the number of bald eagles from 11 breeding pairs to 100 between 1978 to present day.

The population was able to increase through conservation and management projects. This success led to the removal of bald eagles from the Endangered Species Act in 2007.
