Plymouth Meeting–Based Director Provides Context for Super Bowl Ad That Blew Up Social Media in 2021

By

The creative talent behind a 2021 Super Bowl ad that generated a bit of social media buzz had ties to Montgomery County, reported Peg DeGrassa for the Delaware County Daily Times.

The Cure Insurance commercial aired just before halftime.

The ad’s cinematographer, Chris Newhard, grew up in Plymouth Meeting. His mother was a teacher at St. Dorothy’s School in Drexel Hill.

It starred Tommy Pope of Drexel Hill, a 1998 graduate of the now-consolidated Monsignor Bonner High School.

The ad’s script is wryly filled with double entendre in a workplace setting.

Many on social media did not find the ad humorous, believing it may have made light of the serious topic of harassment in the workplace.

“We all went into this knowing that this topic would be controversial to discuss. In our opinion, it’s important to remind people that workplace sexual harassment has, in fact, not gone away, and this may be around for quite a while,” Newhard said.

Criticism doesn’t mean the ad wasn’t successful.

“Success can be determined via shares, positive comments and likes — which we had,” Pope said.

The commercial was directed by John McKeever, who has teamed up with Pope and Newhard on a Comedy Central digital sitcom, Delco Proper, a single-season show about life in Delaware County.
