Viral Video Recorded in Bryn Mawr Considered ‘a Watershed Moment in the History of the Internet’

One of the first funny videos to go viral in the age of the Internet was recorded in 1995 at the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr. Nearly three decades later, there are no hard feelings among participants, writes John Johnson for Newser.com.

The clip shows a high school basketball player attempting a buzzer-beater, but instead of hitting the basket, he ends up bonking a kid on the head. Luckily, the kid was fine, which helps take away any guilty feelings about laughing at the clumsy scene.

The kid in the video, Matthew Piltch, was discovered through some Internet sleuthing by Defector’s Brian Feldman, who called the video “a watershed moment in the history of the Internet.” Piltch, who is 32 today, does not remember much about the moment, but he is happy he was part of a clip that predated YouTube and originally appeared on America’s Funniest Videos.

The thrower was Shipley player Niels Pennings, who still remembers the day well.

“Of course, I felt horrible,” recalled Pennings. “He was crying, and I ran over to him to see if he was OK.”

Decades later, everybody can laugh at the video and enjoy a renewed bit of Internet fame.
