The John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove was one of a number of local historic places in Montgomery County that caught the attention of an El Paso radio station.

Pennsylvanians may generally not know much about Texans, but apparently, citizens of the Lone Star State have in-depth knowledge about us. What’s more, its insight seems to be highly specific, given the naming of Montgomery County as the best county in Pa. by El Paso radio station KLAQ.

The media outlet applied its yardstick to every state in the union, evaluating counties for assets like natural assets (parks, lakes), cultural pursuits (museums, art galleries), scholastic institutions, business climate, agriculture, shopping, dining, and even traffic patterns.

Montgomery County was identified as particularly appealing for its historic assets. The radio station, not surprisingly, mentioned Valley Forge. But it dug deeper into our past, also citing Peter Wentz Farmstead and Mill Grove, the home of John James Audubon.

Household budgets were also parsed and mentioned as an upside of living here. The station noted:

  • Median home value: $305,800 (72 percent of residents own)
  • Median rent: $1,253 (28 of residents rent)
  • Median household income: $88,166

Revolutionary War roots must resonate in El Paso; New Jersey’s best county is, according to the radio station, Somerset County. Among its reasons was the Rockingham Historic Site. George Washington stayed there in 1783 while attending the Continental Congress in Princeton.
