Tired of the Same-Old, Same-Old Restaurants? Phila. Mag. Likes Two In-County Newcomers

Two newcomers to the Montgomery County restaurant scene caught the eyes — and palates — of Philadelphia Magazine food reporters.

Dining out is a definite splurge these days. The cost of all of it — babysitter, gasoline, bar bill, meal check, tip — is up. Which means a meal away from home should be something out of the ordinary. Fortunately, Montgomery County has a steady influx of new restaurants that fit the bill nicely, as noted by Hannah Albertine for Philadelphia Magazine.

The publication set specific parameters for its evaluations: The entity had to have opened no later than the past year (hence the label new). And Albertine and her staff had to have eaten onsite, making the list more compelling than one cobbled from a trip through Yelp reviews or a friend-of-a-friend recommendation.

Its first thumbs-up was for Autana Authentic Venezuelan Food in Ardmore, where its breakfasts, lunches, cheeses, and takeout gained notice.

The menu is accessible both at a walk-up counter (perhaps before boarding a morning train downtown, if any city office workers still do that) and table seating for dinner.

The other notable noshing newbie is Gladwyne’s Homeroom. This daytime café has a short breakfast/lunch menu with items familiar (a towering breakfast sandwich) and surprising (a to-die-for creamy carrot soup).

The vibe is very relaxed, with plenty of hanging newspapers ripe for plucking, browsing, and discussing.

The full list of recommendable local new restaurants (including those outside Montgomery County) is at Philadelphia Magazine.
