Conshohocken Brothers, Self-Taught Vintners, Uncork Urban Winery in Philadelphia
Two Conshohocken brothers — Tim and Mike Capuzzi — have taken their self-taught vintner skills and turned them into a brand, Gritty City Winery. Kevin Tierney allowed the business’ details to breathe before presenting them in More Than the Curve.
The Capizzis inherited their love of wine from their grandparents, who immigrated to the U.S. in the 1920s and brought knowledge of the craft with them.
Mike had been dabbling in fermenting grapes for about 10 years when the pandemic compelled a return to Montgomery County from his base in New York City.
It was here the brainchild was born: starting one of the region’s first urban wineries. He pitched it to Tim, who agreed to the venture.
They pour all they inherited, learned, and experienced into their work, meticulously overseeing flavors, quality, and freshness of the wines.
On Labor Day weekend, their Gritty City Winery retail outlet opens in the Olde Kensington section of Philadelphia with four varieties.
Closer to home, the wines debuted this week at Flanigan’s Boathouse, on Conshohocken’s Fayette Street. They appeared on the menu and in the bottle shop (where some may remain for lucky purchasers who hurry).
The brothers plan a Conshy tasting room in the future.
