Mike Kolenkiewicz and his son-in-law, Sam Ford, are giving back to the community by volunteering with Jenkintown Fire Department’s Pioneer Fire Company #1, according to a staff report from The Reporter Online.

Ford has been volunteering for three years, with his father-in-law joining in late 2021, after years of consideration.

“I coached my two daughters’ sports teams,” Kolenkiewicz said. “I never really had the time to be a firefighter.”

For Ford, having Kolenkiewicz join the company was “awesome.” He said that his father-in-law makes sure to take all available classes and he seeks out advice from veteran firefighters. His desire to help the community did not come as a surprise to his family.

“He’s so down to earth and would help out anyone down in luck,” Ford said. “He’s such a people person.”

For Kolenkiewicz, the lack of experience is not stopping him from trying to play a father figure to Ford. So he often checks up on him and makes sure his gear ready to go.

Both men are also quick to encourage others to consider volunteer firefighting.

“Just do it; there’s something for everyone to do!” Kolenkiewicz said.
